As a beauty buff, you know things aren’t always as they appear. This definitely applies to the labels on your products. Just because a body lotion says “natural,” doesn’t mean it’s free of synthetic ingredients. Lucky for you, we’ve done our homework so you can know exactly what you’re putting on your body. We’ve included regulated certifications with the highest standards and created our own seals of approval for the one’s that didn’t.Here’s a guide to going green on glow.com:
100% Natural
Want to feel like a natural woman? Unfortunately, there is no regulation on the word “natural” so there’s no way to tell if what you’re getting is really natural. That’s why glow has created its own definition of 100% natural. These products are formulated without synthetic chemicals, including parabens, phthalates, sulfates, petrochemicals, GMOs (genetically modified organisms), fragrances or dyes. Just look for the seal and you’ll know these products use natural ingredients derived from natural sources like plants, flowers, fruits and vegetables.
Certified Organic
Organic is the holy grail of natural and organic beauty products. Organic products are not only formulated with natural ingredients, but they’re also certified to contain organically grown ingredients—so no synthetic fertilizers or conventional pesticides. Products must contain at least 70% organic ingredients to be considered organic. Here are a few regulated certification seals to help guide you:
70% Made with Certified Organic Ingredients
A USDA-accredited certifying agent grants this seal to products with at least 70% organic ingredients.*
*May contain some synthetic ingredients.
95% USDA Organic
The U.S. Department of Agriculture seal indicates a product contains at least 95% organic ingredients.
95% U.K. Soil Association
The U.K. Soil Association Seal certifies products contain at least 95% organic ingredients.
Vegan
If animal-derived ingredients in your beauty products aren’t your thing, then choose vegan. The Vegan seal guarantees these products contain no animal or insect by-products, such as lanolin, shellac, honey, beeswax, musk and squalene. However, these products may contain some synthetic chemicals.
Paraben-free
Do synthetic ingredients still have a soft spot in your beauty routine? Take baby steps into the natural & organic world with paraben-free products. This seal promises these products are free of all parabens, including methyparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, isobutylparaben, isopropylparaben, benzylparaben and their sodium salts.
Certified Cruelty-Free
Hey there animal lover! Many companies say they are cruelty-free, but since this is such an important category we thought it would be best to only highlight brands that are certified by Leaping Bunny and PETA, which both have strict guidelines not only for animal testing on completed products, but on product ingredients as well.
Leaping Bunny Certified
Be vain with confidence! The Leaping Bunny Program assures that no new animal testing is used in any phase of product development by the company, its laboratories or suppliers.
PETA Cruelty-Free
PETA cruelty-free certification requires companies do not conduct or commission any animal tests on ingredients, formulations or finished products and that they pledge not to do so in the future.
Environmentally Responsible
Beauty companies’ eco-friendly approach to the production and packaging of their products proves true beauty is skin deep. These methods include sustainable ingredients, packaging from managed forests or recycled packaging, alternative energy, fair trade, or coop farms. Going green can be gorgeous!
